4. ROARING FORK RIVER

A tributary of the Colorado River, the Roaring Fork drains a watershed approximately the size of Rhode Island, flowing 70 miles through alpine meadows, canyons, and the red-rock foothills of the bustling Roaring Fork Valley (home of Aspen, Colorado), to a confluence with the Colorado at Glenwood Springs.

Population

The most recent population studies estimated 2,300 brown trout and 3,000 whitefish in a 2.5-mile stretch below the town of Basalt. As of the late 1990s, whirling disease had all but wiped out the rainbow trout, but with the stocking of the Hofer variety (WD-resistant) rainbows well under way, there should be a resurgence of the rainbow population within a short time.
